Well...not exactly a ‘streaker’ as we might have imagined it... More like a valuable member who was last seen sailing a Streaker single-hander before deciding to leave us and these shores for the decidedly sunnier climes and the better sailing weather of Florida, U.S. of A. Sadly for us, Les and Margaret Perry are ‘upping sticks’ to emigrate to be nearer their daughter, son-in-law and young granddaughter. For a number of years now they have been acquiring an annual taste of softer living in the Sunshine State. Not an easy decision, they tell us, to leave family and friends and South Shields Sailing Club in particular behind.
Coming into the sport somewhat later than the norm, Les and Margaret joined the Club after an initial start into sailing at Kielder where together they learned the basics in their Miracle before heading to Shields to join in the then reasonably-sized and, as ever, competitive Miracle fleet. For Les in particular, this was the starting point of a determined and very successful plan to be amongst the trophies as soon as possible, a goal which was reached in a possibly unique space of time, excelling in a succession of single-handed boats including Lasers and later the Club’s only Streaker. Not too surprising, one might think, given his early background in high quality engineering together with a passion in younger days for restoring and driving Lotus cars and being known for quiet persistence, dedication and application. Les soon had his new interest well ‘sussed out’, evidenced by continuous improvement in his sailing abilities matched commensurately by results and not a few armfuls of trophies at successive Dinner Dances and Prize Givings.
The Club has a commendable habit of quickly identifying key skills in its membership in order to keep it ship-shape and business-like... ‘If we can find members to do it or make it in-house then we will’ being something of a Club mantra. Accordingly we have always been well-endowed with the products of this assiduously applied policy. Les, without knowing it probably, was subjected to ‘the scrutiny’ early on and of course has been seen since as a regular and valued member of the Tuesday Maintenance crew, giving freely of his valuable engineering expertise over the whole of his time with the Club whilst Margaret has always had an ear to the siren call of the kitchen....
Well, we will miss them a lot and wish them a safe journey to their new ‘New World’ (with not a little tinge of envy over their prospect of silver-sanded beaches, lagoon-like waters to sail on, gentle breezes wafting their boat round a few windward and leeward marks before a cocktail or three back with Humphrey Bogart at the ‘Key Largo Club’). Come to think of it, Les always has the slight look of Humphrey B, does he not?
‘Bon Voyage’ to the Perrys-The Club really appreciates their valued contributions as members and we extend our good wishes to them and their family in a new life in the States.
